The relatively new Plettenberg bay wine route is a wonderful addition to what is already a favorite holiday destination along the Garden Route. Besides the wonderful beaches and other natural attractions, it is well worth supporting these young boutique vineyards, for their unique wine and gourmet offerings.
I recently visited, what's referred to as the Crags area; there are enough wineries along this rustic wine trail to make a day of it, provided you have a sober driver of course. This is a cool climate zone and although it’s still early days; Methode Cap Classique, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have been identified as the best suited varietals.
All 3 vineyards I visited were beautifully situated and had delicious menus on offer. I would have been back every day to try them all, given the chance. There were plenty of drinkable wines on offer and certainly to compliment a meal. Service was attentive and friendly and the vineyards were all quick to promote one another and offer advice on where to visit. Sadly Newstead was closed for a private function on the day but here is a sneak peek at what I did get to see and taste.
Lodestone Vineyards
Beautiful setting, delicious sounding menu, very friendly and welcoming and their Pinot Noir is worth a quaff!
Friendly farm dogs too!
Kay and Monty Vineyard
Just beautiful, personal attentive service, only 3 wines but definitely worth a visit and maybe a lunch too!
Bramon wine estate and restaurant
The wine tasting shed is close to the Main rd, rather book lunch at the restaurant, you won't be disappointed. Dine literally in the vineyards and choose from a selection of incredible tapas, you must order the bread! Far surpassed my expectations and cant wait to return.
