The no. 1 question I get asked is “what is your favorite vineyard?” I never know how to answer this, I have many favorites and for different reasons but these 5 are among my best and here's why.
Oldenburg
The setting and scenery are breathtaking; one feels as though you are part of the mountain rather than just looking out at a postcard cutting. It sees less foot traffic than neighboring vineyards which means a more attentive service and most importantly the wines are excellent and paired with a complimentary cheese board.
Black Elephant Vintners
This has to be my favorite visit in terms of “experience”, their music and wine pairings are quirky and creative. Expect to spend at least 2 hours chatting up a storm, drinking lots of wine and making new friends. Tasting are appointment only, small groups and in an intimate setting.
Mullineux and Leeu
For a touch of class head to the wine studio at the luxurious Leeu Estates property in Franschhoek . Bookings are essential: space is limited but so are the tasting allocations of these very small production premium wines. I love all the attention to detail; being welcomed at the door, wine served in extremely fine and delicate wine glasses and a well thought out intimate presentation of their interesting wine portfolio.
Meerlust
When you’re an Icon of the South African wine industry, there is no need for tinsel and foil; reputation built over 7 generation’s is enough to keeps visitors coming to the cellar door. The historic Cape Dutch architecture and rustic old cellar simply add to the charm. Best of all, tasting prices are ridiculously good value.
De Trafford
This off the beaten track vineyard is well worth the long drive up to the top of Blaauklippen rd in Stellenbosch. This is another no frills cellar where the wine speaks for itself. They are only open to the public on Saturdays or by appointment and it’s not unusual to see David Trafford (owner & winemaker) conducting tastings on their festive Saturdays.
